Check Your Irrigation Timer When You ‘Fall Back’ to Standard Time

The Southwest Florida Water Management District has a friendly reminder for you: as we “fall back” for daylight saving time this weekend, it’s a great opportunity to double-check your irrigation system. When you turn your clocks back an hour Saturday, Nov. 2, take a moment to ensure your sprinkler timers are set correctly to keep everything running efficiently.

Did you know?

All 16 counties in the District follow year-round water conservation measures? This usually means lawn watering is limited to twice a week, though some areas—like Citrus, Hernando, Pasco and Sarasota counties, as well as the cities of Dunedin, Longboat Key, Tampa and Venice—have local ordinances limiting it to just once a week. If you’re unsure of your local watering restrictions, it’s worth taking a moment to check.

What to be on the lookout for?

Even on your designated watering day, your lawn might not always need a drink! Here’s how to tell if it’s thirsty:

  • Folded Blades: Are your grass blades folding in half lengthwise? If so, it might be time to water.
  • Color Change: If your lawn is looking a bit blue-gray instead of its usual green, it’s asking for water.
  • Footprints: Notice your footprints sticking around after you walk across the lawn? That’s another sign it could use some hydration.

By paying attention to these simple signs, you’ll keep your lawn happy and healthy while also saving water.
