Bonita Springs Utilities Inc. members re-elected Vincent Marchesani, Robert Bachman and Robert Sharkey to its board of directors. Election Monitor David Owen announced the results during the utility’s annual meeting. (Read the 2019 Election Report Executive Summary.)

BSU members elect three fellow members each year for a three-year term on the utility’s nine-member board of directors. Ten candidates ran for three open board seats.

BSU mailed 23,933 ballots, and volunteers from the League of Women Voters of Lee County counted 3,810 valid returned ballots. Elected to three-year terms, Marchesani received 2,303 votes, Bachman received 1,888 votes and Sharkey received 1,498 votes.

A Bonita Springs resident since 2006, Marchesani joined the board in 2017. He is a retired vice president of corporate health, safety and environmental affairs with global chemical company Basell. He has a Ph.D. in environmental, health and safety management from Rutgers University, and a master’s degree in environmental science and bachelor’s degree in biological sciences and biochemistry, both from Drexel University. An active member of the City of Bonita Springs Technical Advisory Board, he has also served as chairman of the VillageWalk of Bonita Springs Safety Committee.

A Southwest Florida resident for more than 30 years, Sharkey has served on the board since 2009, including a term as secretary. He graduated from the Southwest Criminal Justice Academy and studied ethics and hostage negotiation at St. Petersburg and Osceola community colleges. He retired as a lieutenant after more than two decades with the State of Florida Department of Corrections and is a state-certified hostage negotiator. Sharkey was appointed to the Lee County Coastal Advisory Board and is a member of the Bonita Beach Improvement Association and Lee County Republican Club.

Current board president, Bachman has served on the board since 2000, with multiple past terms as president, vice president and treasurer. A 32-year resident of Bonita Springs and former president of Weitz Properties, he owns WBG SW Florida. Bachman holds a bachelor’s degree from Iowa State University. A licensed real estate broker, general contractor and community association manager, he is involved in construction, property management and real estate sales and rentals. Bachman has served as director and treasurer of the Bonita Springs Area Chamber of Commerce, director of the Bonita Springs Rotary, and a member of the Bonita Springs Board of Realtors.

Other board members are Paul Attwood, Brian Farrar, Frank Liles, Mike Malloy, Ben Nelson and Jim Strecansky. The board of directors holds a public meeting at 5 p.m. on the first and third Tuesdays of each month. In addition, each board member serves on various subcommittees and work groups.
